Simplified body part definitions and  and  functions

Adomainals (Abs)- A set of eight small muscles located in the stomach region that help you crunch forward and twist side-to-side, Everyone has all eight of these abdominal muscles –but you can’t SEE all of them unless your body fat is low.

Back-   A LARGE set of muscles (upper, middle of lower), located on (you guessed it) the backside of your torso. In fact, the back is probably THE largest set of muscles on your entire body. They do everything from pulling your arms down and together behind you (upper/middle), to raising and lowering your torso from a bent-over position (lower)

Biceps (Bic)– A set of two muscles, located in the front part of the upper arm, used to raise and lower the forearm.

Calf- A set of two muscles, located in the back of the lower leg. Its function is to control foot motion (stand on your toes, rotate the foot, etc.) and to provide overall support and balance to entire body. This is a very hard muscle to develop for most people, so just be aware of that fact. Anyone can develop impressive calves if given enough time and persistence.

Deltoids (Delts, Shoulders) –A set of muscles including the trapeziums (traps) running along the shoulders, and front/medial/rear delts on the outside (where shoulder pads in coast are put). The shoulders work to raise the arms and upper torso, and to assist in pressing movements.

Forearm – The part of the arm between the elbow and the wrist-also called the lower arm. The primary function of the forearm is to control the hand, provide grip strength, and to control arm motion at the elbow joint.

Hamstring (Hams) - A set of muscles in the back of the upper leg designed to curl your foot towards your butt, and provide stability when squatting down.

Pectorals (Pacs, Chest) Two medium sized muscles, the left and right of your upper front torso, and designed to pull together your right and left arms. Remember, muscles can only PULL- they cannot PUSH, So when you bench press with the pectorals, you are effectively pulling your arms up and together (with help from the Triceps) to “push” the weight up. The chest in one of the more aesthetically pleasing body parts.

Quadriceps (Quads) - A set of four muscles (hence the “quad” part) located in the front part of the upper of the upper leg. Its function is to raise and lower the lower leg (which also allows you to “push” your body up from a squatted position or to extent the leg to front from a seated position). It is one of the most difficult and nauseating body parts to train, and is therefore one of the most neglected as well. Also called the “Leg Biceps.”

Thighs – A term given to the upper leg and made up of a combination of the Quadriceps and Hamstrings.

Triceps (Tris) A set of three muscles, located in the rear part of the upper arm, designed to extend the lower arm (similar to what the Hamstring do). The triceps looks like a horseshoe (an inverted U) when property developed.
